News for alumni, donors and friends
February 2014

Dear alumni and friends

Welcome to the first edition of eSydney for 2014. This year promises to be a busy and exciting one for the University.

This year’s Australia Day honours provided another opportunity to celebrate the University’s excellence in service to the community. More than 70 alumni, staff, donors and friends were recognised for their achievements. Congratulations to alumnus Professor Bruce HJ McKellar, who was named Companion (AC) of the Order of Australia, the highest honour awarded, for service to science.

I would also like to acknowledge the dedication and commitment of Ms Tracey Beck as the Director of Alumni Relations and Events, who recently left the University to pursue new challenges. I am sure you will join me in expressing a warm thank you to her and wish her well in her future career.

This week we will welcome the first students to the new research and education hub of the Charles Perkins Centre, our state-of-the-art building designed to foster multidisciplinary research targeting obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. We will also start work on facilities in the Queen Mary building, which will provide accommodation to over 800 students from Semester 2 next year.

Projects such as these would not be possible without the support of our alumni, donors and friends. Thank you for your continued involvement in the development of the University and I look forward to sharing many more achievements together in 2014.

Best wishes

Dr Michael Spence
Vice-Chancellor and Principal
