Dear alumni and friends

Each year the Faculty recognises the important contributions made by our alumni locally and outside Australia in community service and their professional field at our annual Faculty Awards Night.

The recipients of these awards are people whose achievements are of the highest caliber and may have already attracted attention in their field, or may as yet be unknown to a wider audience. President, FHS Alumni Association Executive Committee
I am delighted to have been elected President of the Health Sciences Alumni Association executive committee. It is an honour for me to work with a group of passionate health sciences alumni on our committee to execute our key objectives for this year.
NZ Ministry of Health to adopt the Breast Screen Reader Assessment Strategy (BREAST)
The New Zealand Ministry of Health has approved the implementation of the Breast Screen Reader Assessment Strategy as their national training, assessment and research tool to improve the early detection of breast cancer.
Managing ADHD through play
University of Sydney paediatric occupational therapists have developed a play program to teach essential life skills to children diagnosed with ADHD.
Online program to treat children's stuttering
Professor Mark Onslow, Director of the Australian Stuttering Research Centre, says early intervention by parents is crucial in treating children that stutter their speech, and is developing an online treatment program to eradicate the problem.
Alumna wins Fulbright Scholarship
Faculty of Health Sciences graduate and Head of the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Institute in Allambie Heights, Associate Professor Iona Novak (BHlthSc (OT) '93), was recently named a Fulbright Professional Scholar.
Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2013
Congratulations to Dr Gabi Hollows, who has been appointed an Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Sydney Ideas lecture series
The second lecture of our five-part lecture series will be held on Wednesday 19 June from 6 – 7.30 pm. Professor Maria Fiatarone Singh will present on “Ageing well: Size does matter”. Find out more

Lecture number three will be presented by Professor Kathryn Refshauge on the topic of “Fit as a fiddle until … The impact of sporting injuries on individuals and the community”. Find out more

Jordan O'Reilly (BAppSc (OT) '12)
Operations Director, Fighting Chance
Jordan co-founded the organisation ‘Fighting Chance’ in 2010 with his sister Laura at the beginning of his third year of Occupational Therapy studies at the Faculty of Health Sciences. This organisation which was born of a lifetime of watching the struggles of their younger brother, who had cerebral palsy.

Fighting Chance is a youth-led charity assisting young Australians with physical disabilities to participate in meaningful employment and non-work activities. Jordan developed and manages the organisation’s employment program (the Enterprise Program). He is also involved in the recreational program (LifeX).
